pH water quality analysis sensor plays an important role

Oct. 12, 2021

In agriculture and food production, we need clean water. Therefore, it is essential to have a system to measure the quality of water.

pH sensors are an important tool for measuring water quality

pH sensors measure the alkalinity and acidity in water and other solutions. When used properly, pH sensors can ensure the safety and quality of products and processes that occur in wastewater or manufacturing plants.

In most cases, a standard pH value is represented by a value in the range of 0-14. A substance is considered neutral when it has a pH of 7. Substances with a pH higher than 7 represent a higher alkalinity, while substances with a pH lower than 7 are considered more acidic. For example, toothpaste usually has a pH of 8-9. On the other hand, stomach acid has a pH of 2.

pH sensors for good quality water

Changing pH levels can be an early indicator of increased contamination. If the pH reaches above 8.5, the water is considered hard, which can lead to boiler and pipe scaling. You can choose from four main types of pH sensors, including combination sensors, differential sensors, laboratory sensors and process sensors, each suitable for a different application.

Laboratory pH Sensors

Laboratory pH sensors use combination pH sensor technology, but are housed in a plastic body and 12 mm glass. These lightweight sensors are ideal for light applications including research and education, pool monitoring, and environmental sampling. The versatility of these sensors is fantastic. The three types of sensors you can use when looking for the right lab sensor include basic, advanced and research. basic sensors such as the pH1000 are durable and easy to use, making them perfect for use in swimming pools, aquariums and hydroponics. advanced sensors such as the pH2000 can be used for a variety of different sample types, which makes them perfect for wastewater and environmental sampling. Finally, research grade sensors such as the pH3000 are best suited for low ionic samples, including drinking water and pharmaceutical applications.

Combination pH Sensors

The combination pH sensor is by far the most commonly used sensor, primarily because this type of sensor can be used as the basis for creating laboratory sensors and process sensors. The electrochemical sensor is equipped with two different electrodes, including a reference electrode and a measurement electrode. While you record the pH value, the reference electrode focuses on keeping the signal stable, while the measurement electrode will identify if there have been any recent changes in the pH value.

Differential pH Sensors

Differential pH sensors work differently than combination pH sensors because they are equipped with three electrodes. While the first two electrodes are the same as those used in the combination sensor, the third electrode is a metal ground electrode. Standard pH sensors can become contaminated when pH values change, but using the third electrode as a buffer for the measuring electrode ensures accurate readings even when contamination occurs. As a result, these sensors should last longer and are ideal for harsh wastewater and industrial applications.

The importance of quality water systems

For everyday consumers, poor water quality can lead to health problems, dull hair, rough clothes and dry, itchy skin. pH sensors play a very important role in water quality and water treatment. When the pH level in a water treatment plant becomes too high or too low, the water becomes dangerous.

In a standard wastewater facility, a pH of 6.5-8.5 is considered to be in the neutral range.

Keeping the water at this level and continuously monitoring the pH should help reduce costs. However, it is important to use different pH sensors to obtain the best water quality.

Understanding the differences between the various types of pH sensors can make a big difference in your company.

The quality of the water you use in your various industrial processes is critical to the quality of the services and goods you provide, which means that your return on investment can be directly affected by poor water quality. Managing water quality through different systems is also a key aspect of complying with strict environmental, industry and safety standards.

When impurities are removed from the water prior to the manufacturing process, operational efficiency will be improved, heating and cooling will be more efficient, and you will be able to more effectively maintain compliance with the necessary water quality standards. If you have a well monitored water quality system, the benefits are many and may include.

>Saving energy

>Reducing water waste

>Meet the sustainability requirements of your supply chain

>Preventing downtime

>Maintaining a healthy workplace for your employees

The above guidelines should help you make the right choice, which will save you time and money in the future. For more information on pH levels or smart water sensors, please contact us.
